| Located upon the Yellow Sea and the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, Qingdao overlooks South Korea and Japan across the ocean. The city has an area of 10,654 square kilometres and a population of approximately 8 million people.
Qingdao is an important economic hub, as well as being a renowned tourist and visitor destination. Qingdao is a very dynamic economic centre, being one of China's Golden Medal Cities for Investment, and is popular amongst both local and international companies. In addition to being one of the most popular tourist destinations in China, it is also amongst the top eight cities in the country in terms of the holding of international conferences.
Qingdao is an important industrial city in Northern China, and is the home to world-renowned brands such as Haier, Hisense, and Tsingtao Beer. It is also one of the top ten ports in the world, with a significant proportion of economic activity in the city being focused upon exports. At the same time, Qingdao is the host city for the sailing competitions associated with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Qingdao is the leading centre of economic development in Shandong Province, and is an economic centre within the Bohai Rim Economic Region. The retention of Qingdao as the leading economic centre within Shandong Province represented an important component of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan relating to Shandong Province, which was formulated in 2006. It is proposed that Qingdao will become a regional economic centre in China, as well as an important city in terms of the broader integration of China into global economic activity. The Five Year Plan also highlighted the role of Qingdao as an example for accelerating reform and modernization within China.
Currently, the Government in Qingdao is focused upon the establishment of the city as a key port in Northern China, as well as the further development of economic activity involving product distribution, technical research, international conferences and business, investment, and tourism. These activities are considered to take full advantage of the unique characteristics of Qingdao in terms of port, tourism and marine resources.
