Pop up stores An evolving Retail concept
The excitement over the recent pop-up festival Artbox is a clear indication that consumers are looking for a unique experience beyond the confines of shopping malls. Space planners call this programmatic placemaking – short-term, temporary enhancements to the overall shopping experience that engage the senses visually, through lights and sound, virtual reality and the many possibilities that technology offers to up the ante on retail-tainment. With temporary pop-ups, retailers will also be able to manage costs better.

Artbox & Siloso Grillfest

Chaos aside, Artbox created the perfect climate for over 500 regional vendors and partners. It’s clear organisers took pains to create a novel experience for Singaporeans. From the moment shoppers stepped into the event space, they were greeted with huge light installations of “ARTBOX” on shipping containers, and a stage area with beanbags to relax and enjoy live music performances. The 5000 fairy lights, instagrammable food and drinks as well as the numerous novelty retail stalls had one goal in mind – to pique the curiosity of Singaporeans, youngsters and families alike.

Siloso Beach was transformed into a BBQ giant haven, with about 20 pop-up food stalls spanning across 1 km. Consumers savored a wide variety of gastronomic offerings from participating F&B outlets.. Not to forget the live music performances and a carnival-like setting, immersing its foodies in the perfect beach festival.

POP Up Stores For All

Pop-up stores have provided retailers with a platform to test new products or to clear seasonal stocks . It has also assisted landlords to fill vacancies as they await permanent concepts for the location.

Some pop up stores are deliberately created to promote brands within their malls. Typical examples are those created in ION Orchard and in the Visual Arts Centre in Dhoby Ghaut.

Some pop-ups have gone beyond the basics and now offer experiential retail to increase product knowledge and dwell time in their stores. In fact, it is possible to amplify the concept in Orchard Road. Pop up stores will give retailers a free hand to curate different pockets of spaces to display their products and services at various times of the year, beyond the seasonal festivities of Christmas and Chinese New Year. With temporary pop-ups, retailers will also be able to manage costs better.
